Bryan James Smith

Bryan James Smith, age 35, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 28, 2011 with his wife and sister by his side.
Bryan was born September 29, 1975 to Ricky and Judith Smith in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At age three, the family relocated to Aurora, Ohio where he attended Craddock Elementary School and Harmon Middle School.
At age 10, Bryan was diagnosed with Leukemia. After a four year battle, Bryan was cancer free.
In 1987, Bryan moved with his family to Sandy, Utah where Bryan attended and graduated Hillcrest High School (1994). Bryan began college at Weber State University on a vocational scholarship.
In 1999, Bryan married Erin Brandt (later divorced) and in 2001 they had a beautiful daughter, Kaitlyn Marie.
Bryan worked as a police dispatcher at Valley Emergency Communication Center. Bryan left dispatching to pursue a management position at Cash America Pawn. Although Bryan enjoyed this work, he wasn’t fully satisfied. In 2006, Bryan returned to public safety and attended the police academy at Utah Valley State College. Shortly after graduation, Bryan was hired as a Police Officer at the Draper City Police Department. Bryan quickly became part of the law enforcement family.
In 2006, Bryan met the love of his life, Kasie Marks and her wonderful son, John Nathan. Kasie and Bryan were married on June 7, 2007.
In 2009, Bryan was diagnosed with Appendiceal Carcinoma. He was treated at the Huntsman Cancer Institute with numerous different types of chemotherapy and surgeries. Unfortunately, he was unable to overcome the cancer.
Bryan adored his children and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Bryan enjoyed camping and traveling, especially cruises. Bryan was a kid at heart. He enjoyed playing with legos, model trains, and radio controlled airplanes and cars.
Bryan was known by all to have a very big heart. He was extremely generous and will be dearly missed by those who knew him. Bryan leaves behind his wife, Kasie Smith, two beautiful children Kaitlyn, 10, and John, 10.
Bryan was survived by his father, Ricky Smith (Donna), brother Michael (Cari) Smith, sister Erika Smith, sister Kristen Smith. Bryan will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Bryan was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Ann Smith and grandpa, Joseph Ruskowitz.
The viewing will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Larkin Sunset Gardens at 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, Utah.
A viewing will also be held on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the funeral services which will begin at 12:00 p.m. at The Adventure Church at 352 West 12300 South in Draper, Utah.
In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted through the Bryan Smith Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank. Bryan’s family would like to thank the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, Leann and Latoya from Life Path Hospice, and the Draper Police Department and F.O.P.
